Sand the surfaces using hand or a power sander. I start with 220 grit paper and move through 400, 600, 800, and finish up with 1200 or even 2000.

Note that you can easily sand through the veneer with the 220 grit paper, so proceed carefully. The veneer may already be finished well enough that you could start with 400 grit paper.
